How do you define mental health?

  • Our emotional, psychological, and social well-being are all parts of our mental health. It influences our feelings, thoughts, and behaviors. It also influences how we respond to stress, interact with people, and make wise decisions.  Mental health is crucial for everyone, from young children and adolescents to adults.

Why is it called mental health?

The word “mental health” progressively took the place of allusions to “mental hygiene” in the years following World War II because of its positive connotations, which extend beyond the treatment of illness to include preventive and promotional aspects of healthcare.

It is critical to safeguard and promote everyone’s mental health in the framework of national initiatives to improve mental health, as well as to attend to the needs of those who suffer from mental illnesses.

Community-based mental health care should be used to do this, since it is more acceptable and accessible than institutional treatment, aids in the prevention of abuses of human rights, and improves the outcomes of recovery for those with mental health issues. The delivery of community-based mental health services should be facilitated by a network of connected programs that include:

  1. mental health services that are incorporated into primary care through task-sharing with non-specialist practitioners and integration into regular hospitals;
  2. community mental health services, which could include psychosocial rehabilitation, peer support services, community mental health teams, and supported living services; and
  3. services that provide mental health treatment in non-health and social service contexts, including jails, child protection, and school health services.

Types of Medicines:

  1. Antidepressants are used to treat eating disorders, borderline personality disorder, panic disorder, PTSD, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and depression.
  2. Antipsychotic medicines are used to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and psychotic symptoms (delusions and hallucinations).
  3. Anxiety and sleeplessness are treated with sedatives and anxiolytics.
  4. Sleep-inducing and -maintaining hypnotics
  5. Stabilizers of mood are prescribed to treat bipolar disorder.
  6. Stimulants are prescribed for ADHD.

Sometimes, additional therapies are employed. Most frequently, severe depression that has not responded to conventional therapies is treated with electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), a medical procedure that involves administering electrical currents to the brain. Some of the more recent methods being utilised to treat some mental problems include transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), vagus nerve stimulation (VNS), and deep brain stimulation (DBS). The seasonally depressed are treated with light treatment.

Sub-tracks of Psychiatry and Mental Health:

Most psychiatrists take a voluntary written and oral examination administered by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology to become “board certified” psychiatrists after finishing residency training.

Following their four years of general psychiatry school, some psychiatrists also pursue further specialised training. They could receive certification in:

  1. Psychiatry of children and adolescents
  2. Age-related psychiatry
  3. Legal or forensic psychology
  4. Psychiatry of addiction
  5. Using analgesics
  6. (Mind and body) psychosomatic medicine
  7. Sleeping pills

A few doctors decide to pursue further education in psychoanalysis or psychiatric research.
