Acute Care
Acute care refers to the amount of medical care provided to a patient during their recovery from surgery, for diseases resulting from disease or trauma, and for a brief but severe episode of illness.
What is considered acute care?
Acute care is a subspecialty of secondary healthcare in which patients are treated actively but briefly for a life-threatening sickness or injury, an urgent medical issue, or while they are healing from surgery. Acute care is the opposite of chronic care, or longer-term care, in the medical sense.
Here are some examples of acute care:
- Urgent medical procedures.
- Intricate and planned surgical procedures.
- Delivering a child.
- Severe sickness, accident, or illness that needs ongoing observation.
- Rehabilitation for patients with severe injuries, mental health issues, or substance abuse.
